Because it's always about me when I'm on tour. So much self-awareness definitely comes into the fold when it's not all about me. And I was interacting with my friends in a new way where I was seeing them all the time. I started this job as a teenager, did the job as well as I could as a teenager that knew what I knew, and as soon as I got off that Lush tour, I was really experiencing real life because I wasn't on tour anymore for the first time as an adult. But it's hard to even sum up everything that changed, because everything changed. I could go on and on and on about the self-actualization process that happened in the period of time before and after making the record. And I think you get a little taste of all of the stages of grief in all the songs. There is a certain loss of innocence that just comes with experiencing real life. Just coming out of that period of idealization, and realizing that relationships can't be between people and concepts, they're between people and people. And then this record is about being in love, losing love, experiencing it exactly how I wanted it on Lush, and then realizing that's not how it works. I think it could be said that Lush is all about idealizing the perfect relationship in a way, and wanting and yearning and all that stuff. And the reality of everything is very severe.” sort of just talking about how real that loss feels when you're actually all alone. I was like, “Wow, everything has been such a nice distraction up until now. And then, I wasn't on tour, the pandemic started, and I had to make a record. I was just coming out of something that had been really serious for me and intense. I wanted this to be my everything so bad.” It's the most intense loneliness. Because it's just like, “Well, I just screwed up everything for this.” This song is just kind of like, “Damn, here I am now with zero, nothing. It does feel like you can only distract yourself for so long.Īnd then, when it's gone, you're left with ruins. There's just something about coming out of a relationship that takes over everything. I think the story that I'm telling in that song is one of having this all-consuming love … and then, when it's gone, you still have to live every day and you still have to work and do your job and you still have to be a person and you still have to exist. I think that's the central imagery on that album, and it kind of divides side A and side B, if you consider side A to be more like when everybody's around and B to be when everyone's gone. “Automate Me” closes with the image of loneliness after a party clears out.
